Trip Planning Step-by-Step Guide

Planning for a trip is a very tiring, yet one of the most exciting thing in my opinion.
I do a very extensive planning, and at times I plan an itinerary even when I don't have any upcoming travel plans. I also enjoy taking inspiration fro other people itinerary.
Although, I feel that there is too much information out there. Lot of effort goes into figuring out, what information is to be used and what is to be ignored.
Step by Step guide on how to plan your next trip - deciding destinations, booking flight and stay, preparing for trip and having fun while traveling.

1. Shortlisting BROAD region or country to visit

Deciding the region to travel to depends on below two factors, in the order decided by personal situation and priority (a must-try experience or activity Versus save some money)

Interest or Flavour of the trip and Dates

Budget

Number of travellers is a factor. I travel economy and I stay in affordable hotels.
Output: Broad region or country which can be visited (i.e. Europe/ SEA / LatAm/ Asia / Oceania / NorAm or slightly more specific Maldives/ Mauritius / French Polynesia / Caribbean)

2. Narrow down on Country to visit -

Decide on the primary/ landing country

Flight search for deals around travel dates Seasonality: not extreme temperature, not too hot (I prefer shoulder seasons) Crowd: not very crowded, but also not deserted ( else, lot of attractions and restaurants are closed down) Remove countries which have any safety concerns around travel dates

For tie-breaker between 2 destinations

Popular festivals Food preference Language comfort and friendly locals What wife says!
Output: Landing country for the trip is finalised

3. Book the onward/return Flight or Train tickets

With good research, (one-way to A + A to B + one-way from B) is cheaper than (two-way from A)
Output: Flight tickets booked

4. Finalise Itinerary - Cities and number of days

I try to stay a minimum of 3 days in a city, so that the only things I remember isn't airport, transit, and hotel check-ins.
Output: A day-wise and city-wise itinerary planned out in a shareable Google sheet, Excel or tool

5. Book Internal commute

Commute can broadly be
(An overnight commute, will save you from booking a stay in the hotel for that night)
Output: Internal Commute booked and and added to itinerary tool

6. Book Stay or Hotels

This is the impossible trinity of stay. Normally, you get only 2 out of the 3 among ( Good Location, Good Amenities, Good Price)

Location or area of city to stay in

*City - Centre (nearby attractions, happening, expensive) VS Outskirts ( faraway attractions, quiet, affordable)

Amenities or comfort of Stay

Budget or Price per might

I research on hotel booking website and read detailed reviews.
Output: Stay Booked and added to itinerary tool

7. To-Do list and shared folder -

Create and execute To-Do List

Shared Folder: Add all flight and hotel bookings and important docs to this and share with co-travellers

Output: All basic and mandatory things planned for the trip

8. Plan activities for the trip

I keep this part of the trip slightly flexible. While, I have 4-5 top things to do( per city ) figured out before the start of trip, for other things, I explore things on the go.
Output: You are 90% ready for the trip

9. Get ready for the trip

Output: Start your trip

10. Enjoy your trip

Output: Have a fun trip

11. Go back to Step 1. Start planning for your next trip

While I come back with great memories and share my travel stories. I start planning for my next trip, having no idea of when to go or where to go.

Although, I feel that there is too much information out there. Lot of effort goes into figuring out, what information is to be used and what is to be ignored. (List of tools I use are mentioned at the end of the article)

Disclaimer: There is no perfect way to plan a trip. This is how I do it, and still there are lot more things to it, and one post won't do justice to it. I would love to know how you plan your travel.

1. Shortlisting BROAD region or country to visit

Below two factors in the order decided by personal situation and priority (a must-try experience or activity Versus save some money)
  • Interest / Flavour of the trip + Dates
  1. Activities: Mountains / Beach / Museums/ History / Road trip/ Culture (Adventure/ Relaxing/ Romantic / Family)
  2. Dates of Travel: broad idea of month or holiday season

  • Budget (number of travellers is a factor) ( I travel economy and I stay in affordable hotels)
  1. Flight/ Train prices: broad range around $100 / $500 / $1000 two-way ( nearby / little far / very far)
  2. Stay prices: broad range around $30 / $100 / $200 per night ($100 in Bali gets a private villa with pool VS a dingy room in Paris, but assuming a viable stay experience, some places won't offer anything decent for less than $200/300)
  3. Intercity/ Intracity commute: affordable public transport VS semi-affordable car rental (toll/ one way/ two way) VS depends-on-location Taxi services VS expensive private drops (island destinations)

Output: Broad region or country which can be visited eg: Europe/ SEA / LatAm

2. Narrow down on Country to visit

  • Decide on the primary/ landing country
  1. Flight search for deals around travel dates
  2. Seasonality: not extreme temperature, not too hot (I prefer shoulder seasons)
  3. Crowd: not very crowded, but also not deserted ( else, lot of attractions and restaurants are closed down)
  4. Remove countries which have any safety concerns around travel dates
  • For tie-breaker between 2 destinations
  1. Popular festivals
  2. Food preference
  3. Language comfort and friendly locals
  4. What wife says!

Output: Landing country for the trip is finalised

3. Book the onward/return Flight or Train tickets

  • Two-way flight: if budget is a constraint + good return flight deal is available + not going to far away destinations on trip
  • One-way flight: if return destination could be different then just book onward flight
with good research, (one-way to A + A to B + one-way from B) is cheaper than (two-way from A)
Output: Flight tickets booked

4. Finalise Itinerary - Cities and number of days

  1. Interests of yours and co-travellers
  2. Commute time/ convenience
  3. Return city is same or different (circular trip or linear trip)
I try to stay a minimum of 3 days in a city, so that the only things I remember isn't airport, transit, and hotel check-ins.
Output: A day-wise and city-wise itinerary planned out in a shareable Google sheet, Excel or tool

5. Book Internal commute

Commute can broadly be
  • Public transport: I prefer Trains/Buses in Europe, Flights in Asia/SEA
  • Car Rental: Freedom to explore at will. Two-way rental only makes sense. Toll fee, Parking to be taken into account.
  • Private Transport: Island destinations where the resorts arrange your commute
(An overnight commute, will save you from booking a stay in the hotel for that night)
Output: Internal Commute booked and and added to itinerary tool

6. Book Stay or Hotels

This is the impossible trinity of stay. You get normally only 2 out of the 3 among ( Good Location, Good Amenities, Good Price)
  • Location or area of city to stay in
  1. City - Centre (nearby attractions, happening, expensive) VS Outskirts ( faraway attractions, quiet, affordable)
  2. Prefer day-trips VS spending time in the city (parking is a concern)
  3. Safety of area and connectivity
  • Amenities or comfort of Stay
  1. Hotel VS Hostel VS Airbnb ( meet fellow travellers, party, stay with locals, keep to yourself)
  2. Amenities: Kitchen, Pool, Gym, Pet-Friendly
  • Budget or Price per might
I research on hotel booking website and read detailed reviews.
Output: Stay Booked and added to itinerary tool

7. To-Do list and shared folder

  • Create and execute To-Do List
  1. Visa, Travel Insurance, Health care
  2. Packing list: based on season, activity planned
  3. Shopping list: based on season, activity planned
  • Shared Folder: Add all flight and hotel bookings and important docs to this and share with co-travellers

Output: All basic and mandatory things planned for the trip

8. Plan activities for the trip

I keep this part of the trip slightly flexible. While, I have 4-5 top things to do( per city ) figured out before the start of trip, for other things, I explore things on the go.
  • Research things to do: read about activities and food you want to try on blogs, google, tripadvisor, lonelyplanet, youtube etc.
  • Bookmark activities: bookmark or notes tool, Google maps, Tripadvisor, Trip Planing tool
  • Book activities: some popular activities, events tickets or a restaurant you want to visit, have to be booked in advance

Output: You are 90% ready for the trip

9. Get ready for the trip

  • Important and emergency contacts noted down
  • Inform your family about your plan in case of emergency
  • Sort out your airport/station to hotel commute
  • Inform hotels about any additional requirements
  • Research any safety and local tips

Output: Start your trip

10. Enjoy your trip

  • Meet local people and fellow travellers
  • Eat local cuisine
  • Don't waste time sleeping in the room
  • Respect the local customs and culture

What Price Does is Real, and Everything Else is Only a Thought.

What Price Does is Real, and Everything Else is Only a Thought.
At the start of the week I made posts saying I thought USDJPY was heading to 110 - 111 this week. I later revised that.
At the start of today I said I thought USDJPY would be up, with a low of 105.40 (it'd been at 105.30 already, actually. I was buying 105.40). This had a 7 pip stop and I'd posted another pending order to buy 105.15. This filled, but later in the day I posted I was exiting all USDJPY. Furthermore, I went short.

I have some questions about this (and some accusations), and I think what it boils down to really is, "What's with the random flip flopping?" I'd be happy to explain.

First we'll chart up the trade themselves. Let's map out clearly the events and outcomes we're talking about here. Here I'll only use the actionable entries and exits. By which I mean, the times I specifically said XXX price enter, XXX price stop. These are the only times I've been engaging the market. The rest has been discussing plans, not executing them.

Signals I gave;

USDJPY buy 104.60. Stop 104.20
USDJPY buy take profit 106.06
USDJPY buy 105.75 stop 104.20
USDJPY buy updates, tight stop entry 105.75 - 105.80. Stop 105.60
USDJPY take profit 106.50
USDJPY sell 106.50. Stop 106.80
USDJPY take profit 105.35
USDJPY buy 105.35. Stop 105.27
USDJPY stop hits. 8 pips loss.
USDJPY sell 105.35. Stop 105.48
USDJPY take profit 105.20

(There was one more trade planned and possibly executed on by some people. I've not included it since there was no exits given. Just a price action condition to enter. I'll touch on that trade too a little)

I can't be bothered getting all the stuff together to show this, but it is in my weeks posting history. Those of you who followed closely what I was posting this week and had these trade plan discussion with me where we defined the actual entry and exits, please confirm in the comments this is at least reasonable accurate.

White, green winning buys.
Yellow winning sell.
Red Losing buy.
(The final scalp I've not added because it's too small. It was from about the last high to last low, though. You can check)

I think these are good trades. Throughout my posts talking about these trade setups I think I've presented solid reasoning, and good information on risk awareness and control. I think that, but we all have perspectives. Here's an exchange with someone with another perspective thinking my way of trading (I don't think they read 1/4 of my posts to know what I am doing) is harmful to explain. Only to those who do not consume the full explanation., would be my thought.

The entries that are being criticised here are the white buy, the green buy and the yellow sell. When we look at these on a chart, it is clear this was not teaching people to reverse because price was not going there way. It was teaching them to take profits at good places, and enter into new trades with good probabilities. There was only one time the market moved against the direction I'd given in trading signals, it was the buy today. It was from 135.27, and it hit a 8 pip stop.

After the stop hit, price retested the entry level and then continued to head lower into the close of the week (we sold, profiting from this and covering the loss on the buy). Everyone has their own ideas about how things can and can not be done, but the raw facts here are none of my signals exposed to large risks, and the trades entered and exited at excellent prices. Whether or not this is gambling depends on how often I can do it. I done exactly the same trade pattern last week.

Before I executed the trade plan last week, I explained every aspect of it. I even drew the chart. Literally. I covered all my forecasts in the close of this post.. Through this week, I've explained the exact same thing step by step, and again entered precisely at the start and end of swings. If you think this is gamblers luck, I don't fancy your odds. They odds will get longer. I'll keep posting forecasts, execution and reports. I may win or lose, can never know ... but I know the long term trend.

After getting stopped out, I reversed. This was not a great trade because it was late in the week, but is part of an established trading pattern I use. I don't know why you guys stop loss, but I do it because the market has proved me wrong. Usually I have reasons I'd be wrong and why they'd change my view on the market. Here was the specs I wanted to see to keep this trade active.

https://preview.redd.it/lqywirooqnj31.png?width=709&format=png&auto=webp&s=224038831b6421d71e757b8a0b655fe760868f3b

When the London low broke, the entire strategy this trade was based upon failed. Signals from it became invalid. The stop loss this strategy used is placed purposefully. When it hits, price very often will retest the entry but never go back into profit before gathering a far larger loss than the 8 pips would be. So this is the kill point, and also the point at which the market shows counter momentum.

When it does this, I then deploy a contingency strategy where I look for small chart trend and corrective patterns to reverse on the position. I've practised this a lot, and tested many variant of stops, re-entries and reversal. What I do is highly efficient at getting out of the market and covering the loss in the following trading pattern.

All of the trades I posted this week won (even the losing one was dealt with in a winning way). Even though my overall forecast was incorrect, I used strategies and designed trading patterns to adapt my thoughts to profit from what the market was actually doing. Where price really goes is where we really make money. Not in all the reasons we think things about what price can do. I spend a lot of time on what I do. I've been posting here for a month now, and objective review of my entries and exits shows they have done well.

Please .... please, can people stop telling me in absolute terms what "can't be done". You have to start to do one of two things;

1 - Relate the real analysis and entries and exits of what I do to your opinion of what I do.
2 - Start to use the words, "I think ..." if you're making speculations that do not relate to current facts.

Adding to a prospective traders training plan

To the Stock sub, yes I read the wiki, I have been increasingly more interested in the financial markets and learning how to trade. I've been reading a ton on a ton, sometimes it feels like there is so much information it can start to become overwhelming. Sometimes I don't know where to start, and sometimes I don't know where to stop. This is an immense project for anyone to start, and to the people who have 'made it'(everyone has their own definition of success' I have a tremendous amount of respect for you. It seems that, day trading, intraday trading etc. are minimized to, it's basically gambling and if you dump money in the stock market you're an idiot. I once did also subscribe to that ideology and now I realize I probably should have focused on that instead of partying with friends and making some bad decisions, but the wisest of men were once the greatest of fools said a smart guy one time, I think. Anyway just some background, I am in my early 20's and am assigned as an air traffic controller in a branch of the american military. I just developed a rough 'training plan' to get myself on the right track to being fiscally adept. The reason why I am posting is to search for some wisdom from the elders, someone that will take some time to just sift through a couple of my talking points to add or subtract some of my basic ideas, and basically just guide me in the right direction. It doesn't make much sense to go into these things blindly, especially with an area of study a whole career field is designed around. I want to develop a rough map / curriculum to follow for myself, and to try to measure any indicators (no pun intended) of progress. But I am just a beginner, so why not post this on reddit? If anyone has any tips, something to add, something to subtract, that's why this is here. I'll be around to answer any questions for the next hour or so, then I can pickup tomorrow. I'm hoping we as a community can come together with something to give to a beginner like me, with this being the beginning

My motivation – 1. So I can give family, friends and myself a life without worry. So, we have more time to focus on building meaningful experiences and forming a strong relationship with each other. 2. If profitable enough, to donate to cancer research to hopefully one-day cure cancer, more specifically, malignant brain cancers. 3. To have financial freedom. 4. To build wealth for myself and future generations of my family, regardless if it is my own kin. 5. To challenge myself. How I am doing this? Adopting a mix of education, research and simulated training I hope that by the end of CY18 I can have a small account funded 1500-3000 for trading while also focusing on paying down debt.
Education and Research: Reading List 1. Security Analysis – a. To gain a fundamental basis to judge a stocks worth, it has great reviews and has been recommended on multiple different platforms as a must read, so I am must reading it b. This book will not relate to the trading strategy that will be adopted in the beginning to build greater wealth. However, I think this will become a staple of future trading strategies. This book is basically the polar opposite to speculative trading/investment which will comprise the trading the trading strategy used to develop the wealth needed to reach the 25k minimum needed to day trade. 2. Japanese candlestick charting techniques (JCCT)-- a. This book is allegedly a great source on learning candlestick patterns and learning technical analysis. b. The focus will be learning how to read charts quick and effectively, allowing me to draw reasonable and insightful conclusions on the potential movement on stock based on its price-action 3. Will add more to the list after I finish these, but as of now I have determined learning a mix between fundamental & technical analysis will keep me well rounded so I don’t tunnel vision one way of trading. The aim is to remain well rounded and not to rely on one skill too much.
Online resources – 1. Youtube a. Ricky Gutierrez – stocks b. Timothy Sykes – stocks c. The Duomo initiative – Forex d. Numerous other youtube sources 2. Babypips – Forex 3. Lehman Brothers “Foreign Exchange Training Manual” (Dekstop) 4. Reddit? 5. Will add more as they come Simulation— 1. Tradingview.com a. Good charts, great indicators, free ‘real-time’ data and awesome charting features available as well as an easy to use papertrading, seems like a good resource for FOREX/STOCKS b. 2. TD Ameritrades ThinkOrSwim (TOS) a. 60 day Demo account that I called and got real-time data, the closest thing to a real deal trading platform I can get my hands. Will probably keep trying to learn this and use it as my basis for learning how to execute trades in the FOREX and Equity Markets. b. When the demo account runs out, make a new one, call and get live data set to the account again 3. The criteria used for the trading software a. Don’t make a lot of trades, I want to focus on only taking trades based on as much calculated risk as I can possibly calculate b. Trade around the pattern day trader rule, as when it’s time to go live I want to be used to it. What this means for me, is only take 1 or 2 trades a week, and making them meaningful. c. Try to learn something from every trade I make, failure or success I want to know if it’s pure luck or calculated risk. i. IF it’s a failure, I want to analyze why it happened to the best of my ability. ii. If it’s a success, I want to analyze how it happened and try to really solidify the knowledge. d. Try to imagine the money in the paper trading account is as real as the money in my pocket. e. Don’t rush or force trades, wait for a good “set-up” or situation. Stick to my technical analysis tools/skills and adapt to changing situations based on news releases.
Training— 1. Read at least 30 minutes each day of either Security Analysis or JCCT 2. Use youtube, babypips, reddit or some other online resource to learn SOMETHING that day. I don’t care if I am rereading the Relative Strength Indicator equation, I will do some form of online research and make it meaningful or impactful in some way. 3. Using a simulation platform, most likely TOS, develop a strategy for taking trades during the week. Live by the criteria I set for myself. a. Use each blown up paper account as lesson. b. Stay focused and don’t get emotional c. Rome wasn’t built in a day. d. Go live when I win more than I lose, and am green for 4 months. 4. Don’t forget who I’m doing this for and why. To-Do list – 1. Compile a list of terms, phrases, vocabulary and indicators to define/research and call it homework 2. Find or develop a good trading journal that is designed around a specific strategy, and before I enter into any trade I can fill it in this journal and if it meets criteria it’s time to buy. 3. Make myself some form of “homework” at-least once a week and learn from it. 4. If everything works out remain humble and try to help others succeed also. Summary – The goal is through a mix of, foundational reading (Security Analysis, JCCT and others), online resources, and simulated trading I can go from someone with very low to almost no knowledge of financial markets to a profitable and successful trader in the next 6-24 months. Using realistic and measurable goals to gauge progress (how many books have I read since I set the curriculum? How am I doing papertrading? Am I staying focused? Am I too focused?) as well as always constantly reforming and changing the training plan to grow with me I think this is possible.
