[Econ] Making the Best of a Very Bad Thing

November 2030
Well, uh, this sucks. Just a few short months after the Arab States of the Gulf finally unified, the world economy decided to explode. This is what we in the business of economics call a very bad thing.
The effects across the FAS have been relatively disparate. The United Arab Emirates, easily the most diversified economy in the region, has been the least heavily impacted (though it's still bad). Diversification programs in Oman and Bahrain have also helped to stave off some of the worst impacts of the crisis, though they haven't been as successful in avoiding the effects as the UAE. Qatar and Kuwait, still almost entirely reliant on hydrocarbon exports, are not happy with this turn of events. Falling global oil prices, though propped up a little by a sudden increase in demand from China, have left their economies struggling much more than the rest of the country, and in desperate need of assistance from the better off parts of the country.
One major pain point in this crisis has been the FAS's economic ties to the United States. While most of the FAS's trade is with Asia, Africa, and Europe, the US financial system still plays a crucial role in the FAS. The stability of the US Dollar has long been used to protect the economies of the Gulf using their vast Forex reserves (earned from oil sales) to peg their currency to the US Dollar. With the US Dollar in complete collapse, the value of the Khaleeji is plummeting right along with it, causing a significant degree of harm to the FAS's economy.
To help offset this harm (and to decouple the FAS's economy from a country that the FAS is starting to view as maybe not the most reliable economic partner), the Central Bank in Dubai has announced that the Khaleeji will switch its peg from the US Dollar to a basket of foreign currencies (the Euro, the Pound Sterling, the Swiss Franc, the US Dollar, and the Japanese Yen). The FAS hopes that this will help to salvage the Khaleeji's value, better protecting the economy from the collapse of the dollar-based international financial system. Rumor has it that the Central Bank is discussing the idea of unpegging the Khaleeji entirely and allowing it to float freely, but so far, the Central Bank has made no moves towards floating the Khaleeji.
Crises suck. They shatter the status quo and throw established norms and procedures into chaos. No one really wins during a crisis.
But in another sense, they're a double-edged sword. The status quo is often a repressive entity, reinforcing existing hierarchies and preventing dramatic shifts in the order of things. Chaos breaks that apart, giving the ingenuitive and the entrepreneurial on opportunity to better their lot in ways they otherwise could not.
Put differently: chaos is a ladder, and the FAS intends to be the one climbing it. As the largest economy in the Arab World (and one of the world's 20 largest economies) by both nominal GDP and GDP per capita (by a significant margin--it's probably either Saudi Arabia or Egypt in second place in nominal GDP, and definitely Saudi Arabia in second place in GDP per capita, but the FAS more than doubles the country in second place in both categories, so it's sort of a moot point), the FAS hopes to cement its place as the regional economic power.
The FAS has announced a new slate of policies intended to attract rich investors, manufacturing firms, and financiers fleeing the new nationalization program of the United States. New free trade zones have been created throughout the country--especially in the struggling, undiversified regions of Kuwait and Qatar--with the goal of convincing fleeing American manufacturers to set up shop in these areas. Attractions include wildly low tax rates (as low as zero percent in some instances), a common law framework (as opposed to the Sharia-based legal system in most of the FAS), highly subsidized land prices (sometimes free), relaxed financial restrictions (making it easier to move money in and out of the FTZ), and, for large enough firms moving enough operations into the country, preferential visa treatment (making it easier for them to relocate foreign employees into the country). Sitting at one of the major crossroads of global trade, moving operations to the FAS offers easy access to both the world's established consumer markets (like the EU and East Asia) as well as to some of its largest growing markets (South and Southeast Asia, East Africa, and MENA). Pair this with wildly high standards of living (for people who aren't slaves Asian or African migrant workers) and established expatriate communities, and the FAS becomes an incredibly attractive option for American and other foreign firms looking to relocate.
In addition to manufacturing-oriented FTZs, special attention has been paid to attracting service-oriented firms to new and existing FTZs in the vein of Dubai Internet City, Dubai Design District, Dubai Knowledge Park, and Dubai Media City, with the goal of developing a robust service economy that can capture growing markets in the MENA, South Asia, and East African regions. In advertising these zones, the governments of the FAS have highlighted the success of previous ventures in Dubai, which have attracted the regional headquarters of giants like Facebook, Intel, LinkedIn, Google, Dell, Samsung, Microsoft, IBM, Tata Consultancy, and more.
Perhaps one of the most substantial pushes, though, is to attract American financial services and FinTech firms to base in the FAS (particularly Dubai, Kuwait City, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, the traditional centers of regional finance). New financial industry free trade zones have been set up in the four cities, structured in the vein of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). These financial FTZs boast an independent and internationally regulated regulatory and judicial system, a common law framework, and extremely low taxation rates. All government services in these regions are available in English (the lingua franca of international finance), and in events where ambiguity exists in the legal and regulatory systems, the systems are set to default to English Common Law (except for the Kuwait City International Financial Centre, which is hoping to better tailor itself towards American financial firms by defaulting to American Civil Law from pre-2020 rather than English Common Law). Much like in the DIFC, these new FTZs will also run their own courts, staffed in large part by top judicial talent from Common Law (or in the case of Kuwait City, American Civil Law) jurisdictions like Singapore, England, and (formerly) Hong Kong. Using these FTZ, the four cities hope to raise their profile as financial centers. Dubai in particular is hoping to break into the top ten global financial centers--and it stands a good chance of doing so, too, as it sits at number 12, just behind cities like LA, SF, and Shenzhen--while the other cities are just hoping to boost their profile into the 20s or 10s (according to Long Finance, Dubai is number 12 in the world and 1 in the region, Abu Dhabi is number 39 in the world and two in the region, Doha is number 48 in the world, and Kuwait City is number 91).

Useful trading terminology. Part 1.

Useful trading terminology. Part 1.
Hi everyone! Today I'd like to present you some necessary words of trading terminology that will help you to be a good trader and to understand a special service for a trading vfxAlert.
Day Trading
It is defined as the straightforward take action of getting shares of the inventory together with the purpose of promoting them on the very same time.
Professional Day Trader
A specialist working day forex trader can informally be regarded as somebody who day time transactions for a lifestyle, but coming from a regulatory standpoint, it means a forex trader who seems to be certified with either their Series 6, 7, 63, 65, or 66. Investors who definitely are certified pay increased service fees for market details. That is why whenever you open up a merchant account you will need to tell them if you are a specialist (registered) dealer. Working day investors are certainly not required to be registered if they are buying and selling their particular money.
Pattern Day Trader Rules
The Pattern Working day Forex trader (PDT) Principle claims that if a dealer will take 3 or maybe more time investments in a 5 working day period, they may be a day forex trader and so they must keep a lowest account balance of $25,000 USD. Numerous traders who are unable to preserve that equilibrium will business at either a Prop Company (see below), or at Suretrader / Tradezero.
Swing Trading
Golf swing Forex trading, contrary to Day Buying and selling, demands immediately maintain instances. Swing dealers holds stocks and shares for at least 1 night time, but perhaps a lot of times. These are very simple-term ventures.
Stock Market Hours
The current market is open from 9:30am -4pm EST Monday –Friday. You can find vacations when the market is sealed or shuts at 1pm. Pre-marketplace and after-hrs trading is accessible but liquidity is often extremely low since there aren’t a lot of purchasers or retailers buying and selling after hours.
Bull or Bullish
This term identifies a powerful market place of stocks and shares upgrading. This could be accustomed to reference a particular placement the investor takes. When they are bullish, they anticipate the stock to increase.
Bear or Bearish
This expression means a weakened market place. This means investors believe the buying price of stocks and shares or possibly a certain inventory will likely be heading down. When they are bearish, they can offer their bullish roles as well as acquire brief positions.
Initial Public Offering (IPO)
Whenever a organization does an IPO, they offer a set amount of gives to the available marketplace to boost money. This might be, as an example, ten million reveals. If those shares cost at $10/reveal, they are going to increase $100 million in the IPO. This money receives put in to the firm for long term expansion (creating industrial facilities, ideal investments, and so forth).
Float
Drift refers to the variety of exceptional offers accessible to business. Once the company do the original IPO, they released reveals. That quantity is generally the drift, although there are 3 methods the quantity of offers can change. The Float is equal to the availability level. Stocks with restricted provide and high demand are the type that relocate down or up the quickest.
Share Buy Back
A Reveal Acquire Back system happens when an organization purchases rear gives that have been distributed throughout the IPO. Using this method they may be lowering the amount of reveals accessible to industry and everybody positioning reveals in the business will find their gives surge in value. Discuss Buy Backs will decrease the float.
Secondary Offering
A additional providing is an supplying which is provided following the First General public Supplying. Even though an organization functions multiple additional products, they may be always called second (not thirdly, 4th, etc). A secondary offering will raise money for that firm by offering a lot more offers. This improves the flow of shares in the marketplace and lessens the price of those shares. This is certainly generally not one thing long term buyers want to see.
Stock Splits
Stock Split can change the price tag on a stock. The apple company managed a 7:1 stock split. The $700 carry increased all gives by 7 to lower the cost of the carry to $100. This means in the event you held 1,000 offers at $700, congratulations, you very own 7,000 at $100. This increased the drift. Some firms will do a Turn back stock divide. A 10:1 reverse inventory split can take a stock buying and selling at $1.00 and turn it into $10.00. Should you be previously positioning 1,000 reveals at $1.00, you will basically be keeping 100 offers at $10 after the divided.

Ah, but maybe you want to look around a bit and see how China’s total debt is compared with other economies, like this?

If you put China’s data on this chart, it will be somewhere around Canada and New Zealand. Guess Which Country Has Debt Of Nearly 1000% Of GDP... Shocking, isn’t it?
UK has almost 1000% Debt-to-GDP ratio, compared with China’s < 300% Debt-to-GDP ratio, mostly because of that over-sized financial debt - at the end of the day, the government must stand behind it. On top of that, the UK has no resource to sell, hardly any industry left, going through a divorce with EU, and almost never ever meets her fiscal targets. And yet, UK, with its near 1000% debt-to-GDP ratio, is still viewed as the gold standard among safe havens. PRESENTING: The Rosetta Stone Of The Entire Sovereign Debt Crisis Why? Because UK issues debt in her own currency. And who prints the pound? The UK government.
Then you take a look at Japan, wow that’s 600%+ debt-to-GDP ratio! But - Japan’s debt is not only mostly internal, in Japanese Yen, but also with 0% or even negative interest. You can roll this kind of debt over practically forever. That’s why people have been yelling about Japanese debt for the last 20 years, and nothing happens.
Then you take a look at those economies that have blown up on debt:
Argentina: Government/Sovereign debt in USD, with jurisdiction in New York!Greece: Government/Sovereign debt in Euro, with jurisdiction in Brussels!Iceland: External financial debt → nationalized into Government/Sovereign debt in USD and Euro alone was 700%+ GDP in 2008, with jurisdiction in New York and Brussels.
Then you look at China, with her debt almost entirely internal, in Chinese RMB to Chinese citizens, government debt at 55%, lower than the US, Japan, and EU average, in her own currency. China’s external debt is about 9% of GDP, globally ranked 184th (less than North Korea, similar to Kosovo) - anyway you look at it, it’s hardly the kind of material to make a banking crisis. China is borrowing a little bit from her own piggy bank. Argentina/Greece/Iceland were borrowing a lot from the Mafia.
PS: The most significant increase in China’s debt is in the financial sector, driven by rising real estate price (which means higher value of housing loans). Right now, the Chinese government is basically using it as a tool to do macro-economic engineering. The goal is to cap urban growth in top tier cities (Beijing, Shanghai, etc.) and push the economic growth to second- and third- tier cities (Hangzhou, the city that just hosted G20, is an example.http://www.g20.org/English/Hangzhou/About/index.html Now you can look back and see why the Chinese government decided to host G20 in a city nobody has ever heard of). This is clearly stated by the Chinese government like 100 times since last year in the official news channels. The reason? Top tier Chinese cities like Shanghai (25 million) already have more city residents than the whole nation of Australia! The metropolitan area of Shanghai (44 million) has more people than the entire population of Canada! In one city! Beijing’s population grew by 8 million within the last decade! The place is simply full.List of cities in China by population and built-up area
In addition to real estate prices, the Chinese government is also doing stuff like restricting residents permits, disallowing second or third homes, even restricting jobs to local residents, everything to say “this place is full. We have these other nice choices, with lower housing prices. Go there.” Young people complaining about housing prices in tier-one cities? But that’s the whole point. The debt you have to take on to live in tier-one cities SHOULD SCARE YOU OFF. The Chinese government is trying to stop the influx of people pouring into tier-one cities, and get these smart and energetic youths to go build two, three, four, five. … more Shanghai’s in other parts of China. 1.4 billion people can’t all fit into tier-one cities.

There is too much debt, and a lot of it is likely to turn into bad debt, but that does not equal a banking crisis.
Banking crisis may be a nice term to bandy around and get clicks and headlines, but does not really explain what is going on.
There was a lot of debt financing, especially after the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis in the US. In order to keep the economy on a steady keel, the Chinese government, through its banks, pumped money to Chinese state-owned enterprises, in order to keep high employment and maintain an image of “growth”. A lot of this money then found its way into the underground banking system through “wealth management products” and other means. A lot of this has turned into bad debt.
Another problem area, which frequently overlaps with the “wealth management products” is the local government financing vehicle used to fund local property development, which I have discussed here: Paul Denlinger's answer to Why does China have so many ghost towns?
What is likely to happen in China is that growth will slow down in some areas, while there will be certain newer parts of the economy which will continue to grow. If the Chinese government is able to support the newer parts of the economy and help them to grow, while cutting back on loans to the weaker parts of the economy, it may be able to handle this transition better.
This is exactly what the Chinese government is trying to do and you can read about it here:Here is how China is going to quietly save its economy
So, if you are expecting there to be a dramatic run on the banks, and the Chinese people to take to the streets and overthrow the Chinese Communist Party, and become a full-blown democracy like Taiwan, Japan or South Korea, you are very likely to be disappointed.

Is China facing a Banking crisis?
Yes.

Is it facing a full blown Banking crisis?
No.

Combined debt of China is almost 300% of its GDP. But the the categorized in 4 parts as it is shown in the image with the question too.
The corporate debt has the lion's portion of the total debt. The household debt and non corporate debt are nothing to worry about because it is less many other developed countries and has some room to grow.
Government Debt is not too big when compared to standards set by many global institutions like IMF, World Bank, etc.
The only major concern which is of a serious magnitude is the corporate debt. This is also reiterated by many economists.
Now the problem with China is that data that comes out of major Chinese institutions is murky so their are many different types of estimates by many different institutions but the common theme in it is corporate debt and its size.
Corporate debt consists of debt owned by state owned corporations and private corporations. Private corporations in China are generally crowded out by the state owned corporations because of connections and political agenda.
Many state owned corporations have invested into unproductive projects as a result of excess boost given by government after 2008 to prop up the economy. This has resulted in a huge amount of NPAs. So, in all the major problem is state owned corporations piling up huge amount of debt. To solve this problem, the government tried to convert the debt into shares which the bank owns and can recover money through profit dividends but this was one of the causes for last year's stock market crash.
Hence, it is a big crisis but not the one government cannot handle with so much trade surplus and forex reserves. But actions are definitely needed to stop it from growing into a bigger problem.

AgenaTrader to Launch New Kind of Social(ized) Trading, TradersYard

The new service combines a web-based social trader network with a conferencing environment
Multi-asset class and multi-connectivity trading platform AgenaTrader is launching a brand new social trading solution. The firm is focusing its attention on a unique aspect of the trading decision making process. A web-based social trader network is combined with a conferencing environment, to enable the creation of virtual trading rooms across the world.
Join the industry’s gathering! The platform, which can be connected to different brokers at the same time, supports trading in stocks, futures, forex and CFDs. The firm is already working on integrating options trading into the product.
TradersYard will be demoed by AgenaTrader CEO Gilbert Kreuzthaler The major advantage of AgenaTrader is the deeply integrated semi-automated trading approach, which involves tools for drag and drop signals and strategy programming, risk definition, and an extremely powerful scanner which allows the possibility to scan for signals in over 1000 symbols.
Starting strategies on scanner signal – ‘one click strategy trading’ – completes the toolset and enables extremely fast decisions whilst AgenaTrader automatically calculates entry, stop and target levels in combination with pre-calculated order sizes.
Innovative Trader Network The company has considered several aspects of online trading for retail investors. Being mostly a lonely endeavor, and one of the reasons behind trading failure, AgenaTrader is focusing on the social trading aspect. The company is launching www.TradersYard.com, which is ostensibly an innovative open social trader network. It will be accessible to everyone.
Within TradersYard, traders can find other traders with similar trading styles, with the ability to group each other, share information and analysis. TradersYard goes much further than the standard functions of forums.
Traders can create public, protected and private groups where the owners can decide who will be able to participate – just like a social network function.
TradersYard+ Conferencing System The real added value of TradersYard is TradersYard+ with the integration of a conferencing environment, which is encrypted and controlled by Include IT/AgenaTrader. In addition to the posting and chat possibilities of the TradersYard web platform, the conferencing environment offers audio/video/desktop streaming.
This enables the possibility for traders to build virtual trader offices across the world, irrespective of using the AgenaTrader platform. TradersYard and TradersYard+ can be used by anyone, whether interested or active in the financial markets or not.
In such virtual offices, traders can meet each other face to face and share their ideas, analysis, and even trades. Traders who own AgenaTrader have options available for trade sharing, copy trading, and other social trading concepts.
The TradersYard Group concept provides the capabilities to open prop trading rooms or to visually organize face to face communication for trading departments of institutional organizations.
“The combination of a social network with a conferencing platform is absolutely unique in the market and opens up incredible possibilities,” says Gilbert Kreuzthaler, CEO of Include IT/AgenaTrader.
“The current experiences are proof, that most Traders are not ‘lone wolves’. It shows, that traders are heavily looking to socialize with other market fighters.”
AgenaTrader´s partners comprising of educators, mentors, and brokers, can utilize the TradersYard ecosystem for educational services to a highly targeted audience. TradersYard will support these partners to reach the user and create a win/win situation for partners and traders.
Traders need a broker and as AgenaTrader is an advanced trading platform the company can refer traders to their broker partners. The whole concept can also be white labeled by brokers or investment houses. If such a company wants to set up their own social platform, conferencing system and also provide AgenaTrader to their customers, either the whole package or single components can be offered to their customer base.
Gilbert Kreuzthaler further mentioned: “In our beta launch we have experienced that users find this concept extremely helpful and love the idea and functionality capabilities. It’s exciting to hear that they can find each other via the social Web-platform, share trading ideas, analysis, start visually meeting each other within their virtual trading offices and even send trades into their groups.
This can be commented or picked up by their colleagues. Personal relationships are being built within this platform, taking users out of their loneliness, which becomes an added value for them.
I’m very sure that TradersYard will have a deep impact in the trading industry and be massively used by retail traders, Prop and Institutional trading firms.”
Kreuzthaler will reveal AgenaTrader’s new platform at the Finance Magnates London Summit next week.

Lessons from the world of currency trading

Ever since college I have been fascinated by this mysterious world of currencies trading (also known as FOREX). The great attraction for me was obviously the money, the huge potential for profit, but also the exclusiveness of being a trader. I always thought that trading attracts a certain breed of people, where only the best of the best succeed. And, as I always thought of myself as being one of the best, I set myself an objective of becoming a successful trader.
You might ask why I chose to trade currencies. To be honest, I was lured in by the very low entry barriers ( at that point in time, it took close to $500 to open an account; now you can open a live account for as little as $50) and the huge potential to the upside, thanks to leverage. Next I embarked on a paid forex course that opened my eyes to the possibilities that were out there. I opened my first demo account, read my first charts and plotted my first indicators. A new world was taking shape and I was getting more and more attracted to it. But the final argument that convinced me was the fact the forex was the biggest and the most liquid market in the world, with over $5 trillion in daily volumes and the opportunities were all around, to the buy side and to the sell side.
It didn’t take long for me to join the ranks of rookie traders who are so eager to earn some money trading that they go in the markets unprepared and leave with their pockets empty. I’ve spent a couple months playing on a simulator, trying to participate in free contests, but eventually my patience ran out. I blew out a few real-money accounts while in college. Luckily for me, I did not lose too much money, but hey, I was a student and everything I saved went into my trading passion. So needless to say, that was all I had. First lesson to be learned from here: don’t invest money you do not afford to lose. While I believe the money I lost to be a fair tuition for learning the ropes in currency trading, I still could have done a lot better just by practicing more on my demo account.
Nevertheless, I was perseverant in trying to make it in trading. I did not let myself down by the losses I incurred, but I embraced them and got more motivated. After all, if you really want something, then you should do everything in your power to achieve it. When I managed to save some money again to invest in trading, I set my goal to not lose money. I realized by then that another important lesson is to be in the markets at all times. The best way to gain an edge in the market is to be a part of it at all times.
No matter how much I struggled to get my balance up, it seemed that I could not lift my account off the ground (remember I used to fund my account with only a couple hundred dollars and use leverage to trade). I could not offset all the small losses and commissions with my winning trades. Pressure was building up and mistakes took place more often. It took me a couple of years to understand that undercapitalization can “kill” you in the markets. Leverage is an incredible weapon for those who know how to use it, but in the hands of a rookie it is a ticking bomb. Small accounts with high leverage blow up incredibly fast, as rookie mistakes are being exacerbated by the effects of the leverage. Always make sure to have enough risk capital in your account. As it turned out, all my efforts to make it in the financial trading world did actually pay off, even though not as I first imagined it would. I eventually landed a job with a prop trading firm. Here is where things got really interesting and I have exponentially boosted my knowledge. I cannot stress enough how important it is to be among peers that have the same passion as you do, who are professional and have the competitive mindset that will push you to outperform yourself. Of course not everybody is lucky enough (or maybe don’t even want to) to land a trading job, but if you really want to make it in trading you should spend more time on trading forums. Share ideas, compare performances, get your motivation up. Seeing others do it and being successful at it will push you higher than you could imagine.
It all started out as a college hobby and it transformed itself into a career. I just gave it my time, dedication and perseverance. For all of those thinking about starting their journey in trading I say do it with an open heart. It is the most rewarding activity you could ever do. It gives you the freedom you always dreamed of. At least that’s what it felt like for me.
If you’re ready to open your own trading account, make sure you take the shortcut and use the advice given in these lines. Stay motivated, well capitalized, always in the markets, gain your edge and enjoy the ride. You will also need a trusted broker to partner with. Forex broker has great offers for new accounts that could definitely help you start off on the right foot. Just remember the basics and you’ll be fine!

1/8 Oil flat

QM (CL) futures bounced yesterday and are flat today. It is apparently due to the US inventory decreasing. Phil pointed this out in his dec newsletter; he showed how 300000 contracts on nymex had dissapeared. This is where the smart money cashes out and the bag holders come in (unless there is fundamental change).
I closed out my RIG puts for 30% gain while my TZA calls netted me 0%.
Definitely going to be a short term bull until oil picks a trend (which, as i said before, is the only major market catalyst at the moment).
I have been polishing rules to help me stay profitable:
  1. stop FOREX @ 7:30. This is because I am consistently losing my trades after this time, around 70-90% loss rate. Instead of changing my strategy mid day it is probably more profitable to just trade half the day.
  2. No overnight weekly options. Not only do they lose huge value overnight from time decay, but this is also pure gambling since short term volatility is unknown. Too many ways to lose.
  3. Ask risk manager. I have gone through one blowout, so now I use trailing stops and ask my friend if I am thinking of opening a large position.
  4. Patience, wait. Bored? Do something else. Boredom/tired mistakes cost a lot.
If I slip up I will end up paying for it, these rules have redundancies and fail safes to catch me when I inevitably do.
I now know why some guys at prop shops came in for 30min-1hour then left. They were perfect for that amount of time and any more would let in mistakes.
I should look into making an algo of myself.
